Class Description

The Written Communications class writes and publishes articles for the school newspaper, the Outpost, which is published in the Dyersville Commercial. They are also in charge of creating the school's yearbook each year. This class is offered to students in grades 10-12 and is worth 2.5 credits each semester.

This is a yearlong course for students to practice their journalism skills.
Course Outcomes:
  • Employ sound journalism ethics in all newspaper coverage
  • Design effective yearbook pages graphically
  • Utilize cameras, croppers, etc. in creating photos which reflect the school year
  • Utilize computers in designing and perfecting yearbook pages
  • Write effective news articles, feature articles, captions, and headlines for the school newspaper and yearbook
  • Evaluate past issues of the yearbook and newspaper in order to improve future issues
  • Solve problems and resolve conflicts individually and effectively
  • Develop and implement fundraisers to financially support the yearbook
  • Demonstrate effective interview skills in gathering information for the yearbook and newspaper
